The Immutability of God

"Every threatening of God, as well as every promise shall be fulfilled. Talk of decress! I will tell you of a decree: 'He that believeth not shall be damned.' That is a decree, and a statue that can never change. Be as good as you please, be as moral as you can, be as honest as you will, walk as uprightly as you may, - there stand the unchangeable threatening: 'He that believeth not shall be damned."

C. H. Spurgeon

I sat in my family room this afternoon with my mom, listening to Bible teaching that expounded upon Isaiah 19 - 23. This section begins with an oracle to Egypt. It predicts destruction and judgment. The message that Isaiah was called upon to deliver was unpleasant. But it was God's purpose, and no one could thwart it. God's design was to bring destruction so that people might be humbled and then He could bring healing. It was all together loving - but not in human eyes.

This evening, Luke and I remembered reading this sermon by Spurgeon. We reviewed this small section of it, noting his passion. This man did not mince words.

God reminded me of this weight of responsibility. I must be a faithful watchmen and a true spokesmen. The message is clear: If you do not believe and make Jesus Christ your Lord, your destination will be eternal hell. And, in the words of Spurgeon, "When a million ages have rolled away, and you are exhausted by your pains unchanged, unaltered. And when you shall have thought that eternity must have run out, you shall still see it written up there, 'Shall be damned.' O terrific thought! How dare I utter it? But I must."

Sometimes there is an agonizing longing in my soul to plead with those who I know have not made Jesus Christ their Lord. Those who are trusting in their goodness to save them. For I know that eternity will drag on and hell will be their destiny forever.

While there is yet time . . . banish your pride, confess your lack of knowledge, humble yourself before God. What greater mistake can there be than to leave this task undone?

Now that the Lord Jesus Christ is my Savior I see His justice everywhere in Scripture. Isn't it just like in Noah's day? They didn't believe and they all perished. I pray that will not be those we love.
