SIN BIG!

Someone recently told me, "If you are going to sin - sin big!"

Yup! It caught me off guard. Yet, by this statement he was not saying that we should deliberately sin against a holy God. We should never plunge into sin without a healthy fear of our Lord.

Every directional decision that we make should be made with healthy resolve. A fear of failure should never hinder us from running full speed ahead! If our direction is wrong then we will fail miserably, drop to our knees as we seek the Lord, and get up again and run in another direction.

How often do I stop short or never fully declare my plans because of a simple fear of failure? My pride hinders my strength. I would rather accomplish nothing and look good then strive to do my utmost and look like a failure. What selfishness!

What I am doing right now may not even be what God has for me next week. But while I work, study, and teach I am going to do it with everything in me. If this direction is wrong and it will end in failure then I am going out with a bang. I am going to sin big.

First off I guess I should work on setting a better example because it's 2:45am... I just got back from Chris K.'s house and I had some Coke; it has been so long that my body doesn't remember how to handle caffeine.

Anyways, back to the main topic. I fully agree with you in the spiritual aspect but I don't believe that going BIG in one directions applies to everything. When God brings us to a place where we must make a decision for Him or for ourselves we need to press on whole heartedly towards His plan. There are no patches, and we can not be prideful and/or fearful about it, we simply must do it 100% and switch tracks.

I disagree that everything we do should be BIG in one direction only . Spiritual matters are black and white, but other areas require a little diversity and mixing. Lets take a retirement plan as an example: we should have a well diversified portfolio rather then having everything wrapped into one single investment. If that single investment crashes you'll have problems later.
So go BIG in your spiritual life but be a logical thinker in other areas of your life.

Later,
EMH

Thats a really interesting concept. I really don't like failing, probably like the rest of the world. But why do we fall? So we can learn to get up.

Well said. A professor of mine, perceiving both my Christianity and my fear of failure, told me the same thing almost a year ago. Words of Martin Luther, he said.
They have lingered with me since then and urged me to make decisions.

Another one of my favorite people shared with me the words of Kierkegaard:
"During the first period of a man's life the greatest danger is not to take the risk."

I liked your point about resolve
