Biblical Worldview

Today I listened to a lecture by Dough Philips titled, “Biblical Worldview for lawyers.” Don’t worry; I am not even slightly considering becoming a lawyer. ;) Yet I do find politics, law and ethics extremely interesting. It is so amazing how the Bible applies to every area of life. There were so many things about this lecture that I loved. I was talking to Mel over IM when I was listening to it and the poor girl had to hear about my overabundance of excitement.

Mr. Philips started this discussion by explaining that, “He who defines wins.” He stated that whoever it is in a debate who clearly defines the words and phrases that the discussion hinges upon, wins the debate. He used for an example, the phrase “gay rights.” There is no such thing. If you debate against gay rights and yet use that very phrase, you have lost the battle. Sodomite rights are what they are. Gay is the word that the sodomites use to take away the Biblically evil connotation of the word. Another example that he gave was the phrase ‘pro-life.’ He argued that if any man believes, that in any circumstance, it is justifiable for a mother to have her child burned, or have their brains sucked out or have their body parts dissembled; he is not pro-life at all. Rather, he is pro-murder, with exceptions. I do not use such graphic description of abortion to be cruel or gross. I use it to demonstrate what a serious and wicked sin it is. Somehow people in America have pictured something clean and quick when we merely say the word “abortion.” Oh, it is only by the grace of God that our nation has not been destroyed completely. How it must grieve our Holy God to see such things happen to these precious, unborn children.

Whenever Dough Philips speaks he always asks this question: “Does a fish know that he is wet?” Or course, he does not. All a fish knows is wetness. He does not comprehend and understand the meaning of the word dry. The challenge to the Christian is this: are you so immersed in a culture of secular humanism that Biblical thinking is foreign to you? In many areas of my own life, I see that this is true. As a nation, we are so saturated in sin that it doesn’t even alarm our soul. We can turn on the Babylon box and watch immoral people take the name of our Holy God in vain. Americans 100 years ago would have been in utter shock and disbelief to see such things. Even further than that is those “little compromises” that have crept into the church. It is my duty as a Christian to look at everything I do and ask myself why I do it and if it is Biblical.

I loved the illustration that Philips used at the end of his talk. He spoke about Austria and the difficult decision that they had to make about rather or not they would support Hitler as a leader. The people of Austria knew that resisting him would mean a bloody battle which they would surely lose. The people of Austria reasoned that they were saving lives by supporting this evil man. So, 99.75% of the population supported the evil ruler. Yes, many people in Austria were saved as a result. Yet, Hitler used their nation as a platform to kill thousands in other nations around the world. Oops! I bet the people of Austria never considered that. The point is that God is sovereign and we really don’t know what the out come will be. We cannot support evil simply because that is what seems best or because it looks like the most logical and reasonable option. We must come before God alone and look into His Word for the principles, precepts and patterns that He has given to us. Then we must be in that .25% and stand against the majority. You know, no body today remembers the 99.75% of people who supported Hitler. We look at them with contempt and shake our heads. We do however remember Mr. von Trapp, who led that .25% minority. God does not work through majorities. He never has. He works through dedicated minorities. Anyhow, I thought that was a great illustration and I definitely saw how that applied to every area of my own life.

Alright, I won’t bore you any further. Hope ya’ll are having a great evening. God bless you.

Thanks for those comments that encourage us to seek God's kingdom and righteousness first.

Pray that we would do so individually and among our United States.
